The “Little Magazines”

Collection of Little Magazines where Douglas Arvidson was first published.Douglas Arvidson was first published in the so-called “little magazines,” those idiosyncratic, independent literary journals that were labors of love surviving on shoestring budgets.

Most appeared and disappeared overnight but were critical to the careers of writers like Ernest Hemingway and James Joyce. They were, and continue to be, important outlets for the short stories and essays of emerging authors seeking a market for cutting-edge literary fiction.

Pictured here are those that first published Arvidson’s work including Paris Transcontinental which published his international prize-winning short story, “The Rifle,” while he was living in Europe.
